Nicodemus Slough

Nicodemus Slough is located west of Lake Okeechobee approximately 5.7 miles northwest of Moore Haven. The site encompasses approximately 2200 acres in Sections 4, 5, 8, 9, 16 & 17, Township 41 South, Range 32 East, Glades County Florida. The site is bordered on the east by SR 78, on the north by the Herbert Hoover Dike, on the west by private agricultural lands, and on the south by Levee 306. The site was acquired by the SFWMD in 1988, under Florida's Save Our Rivers Program. Before the District acquired the lands the property was used as rangeland for cattle. Past drainage improvements in the area led to attenuated hydroperiods resulting in encroachment of transitional and successional vegetation into the historic wetlands on site. BEC developed an exotic removal program for the site and worked with Bill Conrod on the development and implementation of a prescribed burn program for the site.
